**The River Between Us**

Amara had fetched water from the Oga River every morning since she was old enough to carry a clay pot. She knew every stone in the path, every bend in the current, every face that came and went with the dry season.

She did not know his face.

He appeared one harmattan morning, standing at the far bank with river mud on his sandals and a look on his face like a man who had walked a very long way. The mist still clung to the water between them. He was tall, with the wide shoulders of someone who carried heavy things, and when he looked up and saw her — *really* saw her — he stood so still that the birds in the acacia tree behind him stopped their noise.

Amara did not lower her pot. She did not look away.

She had heard the elder women say that when it comes, it comes like rain on a dry field — not slowly, not politely, but all at once, soaking you before you think to run.

She understood now.

He crossed the river without hesitation, wading in up to his knees as if the cold water were nothing. He stopped a few feet away, breathing. Up close, she could see he was nervous. That made her brave.

*"I am Kofi,"* he said. *"From Adum. I have been walking since yesterday."*

*"Amara,"* she replied. *"I have been standing here for less than a minute."*

He laughed — a full, helpless laugh that startled the birds back into flight. She laughed too. It was the kind of laughing that has nothing to do with jokes.

He helped her carry the pot home. He met her mother. He stayed three days before continuing his journey, and every morning he came to the river before dawn to help her carry water, saying little, learning her silences the way one learns a language — by listening more than speaking.

On the third evening, he stood at the edge of the village with his bundle on his back.

*"I will come back,"* he said.

She looked at him the way she had looked at him across the river on that first morning — steady, certain, unafraid.

*"I know,"* she said.

He came back before the mango season.
